Pt 8 drive dismount issue

I've only been on PT 8.0cs3 (HD2/MacPro/10.5.6) for a week but dismounting a drive via the Workspace has bonked my MacPro twice now. It worked as it should a couple of times, but then this happened twice: Once Dismount is selected, the drive does disappear from the Workspace window but the drive icon still remains on the desktop. Drag the icon to the trash and you get the message that it's still in use and to quit the app. But even after quitting PT it still won't dismount. Worst thing is, when the computer is then shut down, it will not restart. No 'bong' or screen, just stays powered on with black screen till I do a hard shutdown. I had to remove the HD2 cards and reinstall them to get the MacPro to start again. Ran Disk Permissions but problem still occurs. Anybody know what's up with this?

Do you have spotlight indexing enabled for this drive? If so, that might be the problem. All audio drives must have spotlight disabled.

It is a pretty old Western Digital external WD5000E032 500GB drive. It was not disabled in Spotlight so i did drag it into the box to disable it. Tried the routine shutdown but it wouldn't dismount via PT or even after closing PT. Then i checked Spotlight again and it was not in the box and i could not return it to the box. Kept getting an error message that wouldn't let me. The drive WILL mount and dismount not using PT, but once PT is used, if i try to dismount it, the computer will not restart until I remove the HD cards and replace them again. I'll try trashing the prefs and see if that works after I do the card pull - again. Grrrr....

Trashing the prefs via the app from the link made it properly dismount via the Workspace, but still no restart with drive still connected. Tried a different drive, a newer LaCie, same thing. Now won't start at all with HD cards installed. Ran Disk Permissions and it started with cards in. Can't figure it out. Seems like the drives are causing the problem, but why?

In 10.5, some of our systems won't boot if there is a FW drive connected. If you unplug the FW cable from your drives, will the machine boot? Also - I don't trust LaCie's with PT. (nor do I use WD). Have you zapped the database folders on those drives? Based on what you posted, I don't blame the digi cards. I blame the OS and then the drives in particular. Shut the CPU down, unplug drives. Can you boot it up now?

Sean, Boots up fine with all my drives. So long as I don't try to dismount using the Workspace window, everything is fine. Boots up, shuts down, drives work fine. I can dismount the drive by quitting PT, but I didn't have this issue on OS 10.4.11 and PT 7.3. The Workspace dismount command worked fine. If I try to use the 10.5/PT 8.0 Workspace dropdown, the drive doesn't dismount and once I shut down the MacPro it won't restart till I pull the cards, restart, shut down, reinstall cards and boot up again. Is this a bug or my newer systems (PT 8.0/OS 10.5) just not being compatible with my drives? Is it a chipset thing? If so, what kind of drives are compatible? How do you zap the database folder on the drive.

Somehow, the issue is worse now. Drives won't dismount after quitting PT. So I shutdown, remove external FW drive, won't restart. Hard shut down, remove cards, restarts ok, shut down again, reinstall cards - won't restart! Hard shut down, remove cards again, restarts ok, Repair Disk Permissions, shut down, reinstall cards, won't restart! It will not start at all now with the HD2 cards installed, no external drive connected. Help.

Trashed the prefs with that app and it finally started with the cards in.

I need to hear from a Super on this. I can't keep removing/reinstalling my cards to sort this out, and I should be able to swap/dismount drives w/o a total shut down!
