can't connect to 002

just loaded PT 7.1.1 onto my mac book pro, running OS X 10.5.8. Software starts up then tells me I can't connect to my 002. So do I need to just give up and get the upgrade to PT 8? Or is there a problem with the 002 and the new firewire? Want to know before I give PT more money. Lastly, I have a sticking fader on the 002. Any luck on replacing/fixing a fader. Thank you for shining light onto my ignorance.

I believe you can't use 7.1 on 10.5
