Is there a recommended adapter that actually works with Linux? Looking to run Ubuntu 16.04 in particular with one and would like to purchase the right one.

Which features do you want to use? I mean which external devices are you planning to connect and what is your base computer/notebook?

Display is most important. I have some older ones that are very flaky under Linux, usually hardly ever work

I'm using the i-tec USB 3.0 docking station. Basically everything works running Ubuntu 14.04. I have got 2 external monitors, usb devices and network connected. Sadly the DisplayLink driver causes a general high CPU usage. For more details on the high cpu issue please look at the other Linux forum threads.
